Why estimate a one-rep maximum?
A submaximal set can estimate one-repetition maximum without requiring a true maximal attempt. The estimate helps organize working weights and compare progress over time.
Think in ranges
Lower percentages commonly support technique, speed, and higher repetitions, while higher percentages increase intensity and usually reduce repetitions. Exact repetition capacity varies by movement and individual.
Use a training max
Programming from 80–90% of estimated 1RM creates a buffer for fatigue and day-to-day variation. A conservative starting point often produces more repeatable, high-quality training.
Update with evidence
Recalculate after a meaningful performance change rather than after every session. Bar speed, technique, recovery, and completed repetitions should guide the final load choice.
